MONAS I

This national monument is the main landmark in Jakarta. Building started in 1961, during the reign of President Sukarno (according to my LP guidebook it is refered to as Soekarnos final erection), but was not completed until 1975 when President Suharto officially opened it. According to LP it is supposedly built entirely out of Italian marble and the large flame on top is gilded with 35 kg of gold leaf. The monument houses the National History Museum at its base
